Mind+Craft: Do You Want Freedom or Security?

Category: Work Mindset

Prelude: The preference for an employer mindset over an employee mindset is subjective and depends on individual goals, values, and circumstances. Many of us would like to pursue entrepreneurship versus having a typical 9-5 job. Entrepreneurship has many benefits such as thinking like a business owner, having no ceiling to your earning capacity, having greater flexibility and autonomy in your work, not having to report to a boss, leading other, etc. The problem is that not everyone is wired to be an entrepreneur. Many people prefer working for a salary, having a secure paycheck at the end of the month, working within a set time, performing assigned duties and reporting to superiors setting deadlines. If you prefer security over freedom, stick with it. But, if you are like a select few who feel the itch to be their own boss, then embrace the intimidating world of entrepreneurship.

Issue: Do you want structure and security or unpredictability and potential for unlimited financial freedom?

Solution:

  • Determine if becoming an entrepreneur is just an idea or a burning-consuming desire. Is the itch to be your own boss something that has been in your heart you for a while, or is it a passing thought?
  • Next, go deep within and truly think through what kind of person you are. Determine if you are:
    1. An entrepreneur;
    2. Want-to-be entrepreneur; or
    3. Person that takes pride in working for others.
  • Once you honestly answer the previous question, it will be easier to make the decision. You gut should give you an immediate answer.
    1. If you are a natural born entrepreneur, great! Go in all the way.
    2. If you are a want-to-be entrepreneur, do you have what it takes to be one? It could simply be a desire but not a commitment.
    3. If you take pride in working for and following someone else, that is fantastic! Keep doing what you are doing.

Conclusion: It takes time and practice to adopt an entrepreneurial mindset. Being a business owner is natural for some, learned for others, and not a great fit for many.
